Preparing Your Property for Winter

Posted in Blog Post,

With the nights getting longer and the days getting colder, you may be taking less frequent trips to your shore property.  In this case, it is important to prepare your home for the winter months, and the best time to get started is now! Here are several things you can do to keep your property safe, as well as prevent water damage while you are away:

    1. Arrange now for someone to clear snow from your walkways especially if your property has a lot of foot traffic with walkers.
    2. Remove any dead trees or overhanging limbs from your property.
    3. Store outdoor furniture in the garage or shed. If not available, tie it down as best you can to keep it safe from the elements and wind.
    4. Clean out your gutters to reduce the chance of ice build-up
    5. Disconnect and drain any outdoor hoses, showers, or exposed pipes.
    6. Check your home for any leaks or drafts that may need additional insulation.
    7. Have your current heating system inspected.
    8. Set your thermostat to a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent pipes from freezing. The higher you keep the temperature, the safer!
    9. Consider turning off your water at the shut-off valve. Leave your faucets on when you turn the water off to drain the pipes.  (Just make sure to turn the faucets off before you turn the shut-off valve back on). If you drain your pipes, do not forget to turn off the power to your water heater if it is electric, or the gas supply line if the water heater is gas. We have many plumbers we can recommend to help make informed shut off decisions.
    10. Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
    11. Unplug appliances around the home to reduce risk of fire.
    12. Secure any valuables you are not taking with you.
    13. Set lights on timers so that your home looks occupied.
    14. Ask a neighbor to check on your home from time to time. If you do not have the ability to do this, we can suggest many plumbers or contractors that do a “Winter Watch” to make sure your home is checked regularly when the temperatures warrant it.

By taking the time now to prepare your home for the winter months, you’ll be helping to keep your property in great condition, giving you more time to relax when warmer days arrive.

Even though we’re only weeks into Fall, the chill in the air may have you reminiscing of those lazy summer days and dreaming up next summer’s trip to the shore.

The good news is, it’s never too early to start planning.  Here is some info to keep in mind:

Summer through Mid-November is very busy with rental renewals from the previous season. If you enjoyed your rental this past summer and know you want to book the same property for next summer, there’s no need to delay.

Property rates are trickling in each day from owners.  Most of our 2017 rates will be in by December.

January through March will be the busiest booking time for the 2017 summer season. If you are thinking about a rental, this is a great time to make your selection.

While we are more than happy to share our insight and help you narrow the field of properties down online, we highly recommend choosing a day to come to Ocean City and touring the homes. It’s always great to see your finalists in person!  A Marr Agency agent is available to assist you at 609-399-7036.

Many of us continue to be choosing the perfect method to ruin Mother this Mother’s Day. She’s changed her life to rotate around her kids, and she certainly deserves the world (and thus much more) in return. As thoughtful as an exquisite aroma of flowers might be, just how can that alone represent just how much we recognize her? Mom deserves to be spoiled, and many people talk our love for her through words, whether they’re displayed in a beautiful card, poetry or social media post.

Instagram Captions To Make Your Post For Mom

Words are converted directly in the center, which is what makes them so spectacular, unique and genuine. They last a lifetime, and material goods have nothing to them. You may decide to write something for her in your own words, or you can use one of these quotes as the cherry topping to your Instagram captions.

1. “The older I grow, the more I realize my mom is the best friend I ever had.” — Unknown

2. “Everything I am, you helped me to be.” — Unknown

3. “Where you lead, I will follow.” — Carole King (“Gilmore Girls” fans, REPRESENT)

4. “Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.” — Unknown

5. “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.” — Audrey Hepburn

6. “Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There’s no bond so strong in the entire world. No love so instantaneous and forgiving.” ―Gail Tsukiyama
